The marquee at the American Red Cross welcomed nearly 90 early morning risers on Aug. 26 for the August Business Before Hours. Our thanks goes to Pam Shaffer and her staff and board for tours, explanations of the numerous services provided by the Red Cross and for the great breakfast and prizes.
Kathie Palmer from North Adams Home and Breanna Hill from the Alzheimer’s Association won first aid kits, Keith Shaffer from Stoney Creek Inn won a certificate for a first aid training class and Judy Dewey from F&M Bank and Trust Company won an umbrella, all compliments of the Red Cross.
No representatives from the Adams County Health Department, Dr. Richard Gregory’s dentist office or Landmarx Screen Printed & Embroidered Product were in attendance, so we had no winner for the $200 cash prize offered by the Chamber. The pot rolls over and we will attempt to give away $225 at the September Business After Hours.
Quincy Senior & Family Resource Center - July 22nd, 2010 Photo Gallery
The Quincy Senior & Family Resource Center impressed Business Before Hours guests with a delicious full breakfast catered by the Meals Plus program. Attendees also toured the building and learned about the services provided by the many agencies housed in the building.
The Chamber attempted to give away $175 in cash, but representatives from Cass Advertising, the Illinois Veterans Home, and Illinois Mentor missed their opportunity. The money will roll over so next month $200 will be up for grabs during Business Before Hours at the American Red Cross on August 26. See you there!

Attendees at last week's Business Before Hours got tours of Adecco's new office space at 1891 Maine St. and enjoyed delicious breakfast treats. In addition, the Adecco staff explained how businesses can benefit from their hiring and placement services, complete with a demonstration of one of their exclusive testing procedures.
Joanne Dedert from Bickford of Quincy and Dan Meade from the Illinois Department of Employment Security won Adecco gift baskets. The Chamber attempted to give away $150 in cash, but representatives from Transitions of Western Illinois, TJ's Supper Club, and Aramark Uniform Services missed their opportunity to win. Chaddock unveiled its newest cottage, the Gene Simon Family Cottage, at the May Business Before Hours. A large crowd of Chamber members enjoyed a delicious breakfast and learned about the services provided by Chaddock. Many toured the new facility, which will house 10 Chaddock students and is the community's first LEAD-certified (really energy efficient) building. John Wood Community College celebrated Community College Month by hosting a Business Before Hours event in the Paul Heath Community Education & Fine Arts Center. Attendees enjoyed a delicious breakfast including a yogurt bar, homemade stuffed french toast, and Caribou coffee.

November Business Before Hours attendees were rewarded for their early morning trip to Hannibal-LaGrange College with excellent food and networking in a beautiful setting - the Roland Fine Arts Center, which is home to the 580-seat Parker Theatre, the Hagerman Art Gallery and more. The event was a cooperative effort of both the Quincy Area Chamber of Commerce and the Hannibal Area Chamber of Commerce.
The Century 21 Broughton Team won a $200 advertising package from The Oldies Superstation. Dennis Johansen from Lifetime Coatings won a bag of Hannibal-LaGrange College goodies. This month, the Chamber attempted to give away $75 in cash, but representatives from Manpower, Columbus Road Baptist Church, and Midwest Orthopedic Specialists were not present to claim the prize. Sunset Home and Villas - September 24th, 2009 Photo Gallery
Chris Hopson, administrator of Sunset Home and Villas, gave tours of the facility during the September Business Before Hours. We saw the Alzheimer's area, semi-private and private rooms, multiple dining and gathering areas and more. Many residents enjoy a great view of the Mississippi River from windows in their rooms, a coffee shop/ice cream parlor and a large cage with all kinds of live birds. Attendees bought 51 pair of shoes in 90 minutes, taking advantage of the 30% discount offered by our hosts. Thank you to Char and Randy Stocker and staff for a wonderful Business Before Hours event Jan. 22 at Great Debate Books. Participants enjoyed bagels, muffins and flavored coffees, offered by Coffee on Broadway. They learned about the new, locally owned and operated family bookstore, browsed the shelves of new and pre-read books, and heard about an upcoming book signing, featuring the new book of a local author.
Great Debate Books gave away a dozen items (see winners above) and Henry Pratt Tours won The Oldies Station’s $200 advertising package. What a great way to start off the year! Advertising packages will be awarded each Business Before Hours event this year.

Residents shared their breakfast with us and allowed us to take tours of their home. Our thanks to Nancy Waters, Sandy Edgar and staff for a warm start to our cold morning. Bickford Cottage baskets were won by Bill Stalder of Adams Electric Cooperative, Barb Holthaus of John Wood Community College and Carlos Fernandez of WGEM. Sams Club - November 20th, 2008 Photo Gallery
Chamber members were able to check out the Christmas decorations and gift accessories, sample some of the great breakfast foods that Sam serves, buy memberships and play Price is Right at the Sam's Club Business Before Hours on November 20. Four contestant names were drawn from the drawing jar and had a chance to bid on items ranging from a television to luggage to a paper shredder. There were eight rounds of Price is Right played. The person who got closest without going over the total won a prize wrapped in Christmas paper under the nearby Christmas tree.
Many thanks go out Andy Blaesing, manager, and to Penny Lock, membership/marketing manager, for the many employees helping out with the event. All Chamber members were given a gift bag of various Sam items as they left the store.
In addition, the Chamber had a winner for our cash drawing. ETC Computerland took home $275 from the Chamber in our monthly drawing. There had not been a winner all year prior to ETC Computerland winning. Members may still attend our Dec. 11 BUsiness After Hours at Quincy Art Center and our Dec. 18 Business Before Hours at Bickford Cottage for the last chances this year to win.
Harrison Monuments - October 23rd, 2008 Photo Gallery
Fall colors and tastes were bountiful at the Oct. 23 Business Before Hours at Harrison Monuments. Danyelle Harrison and her parents greeted visitors with the "Monument Trivia Challenge" that asked questions such as what two countries provide the majority of imported granites. The answer is China and India. Members also had a chance to identify various stone materials and guess the prices of monuments. Small pumpkins with $5 bills wrapped around the stem were won by Jody Uppinghouse of the Holiday Inn of Quincy, Norma Predmore of Predmore Shuttle Service, Suzanne Maas of Maas Homes and Garage Co., and Judy Dewey of F & M Bank and Trust Company. Brian Hendrian of the Bank of Springfield won a $25 gift certificate from the Great River Restaurant Association. Kathy Mutchler of Bee Line Express won a Designer's Edge Certificate. Food was provided by Delightfully Tasteful Catering. The three Chamber members drawn were Pat Bybee, Royal Printing, and Jon's Doves in Flight. However, none were present so the next pot for Business Before Hours will roll to $275 at Sam's Club on Nov. 20. We hope to see you there.

Chamber members learned about the new macaroni and cheese and apple fries kid's meal coming out and learned about the new design of the interior of Burger King restaurants at the Business Before Hours June 26. Members also had an opportunity to taste the breakfast line including the new bacon wraps. Al Eilers opened his second Burger King location at 635 Broadway in 2008 at the previous Sonic location.

Chamber members who visited WQUB 90.3 FM for the May Business Before Hours learned that the nonprofit, National Public Radio station is the only HD radio station in the area. WQUB broadcasts five signals: analog program, three digital signals and an audio reading program. Nicole Sawin of Simmetry was the grand prize winner of a 17-inch HP Flat Panel Monitor. Other prizes were won by Don Frese of Davis & Frese, Kathy Wolters of With You in Mind, Art Greenbank of First Bankers Trust Company, Jana Carter of Mercantile Bank, Tamra Cowen of Curtis Creek Gracious Retirement Living and Larry Schaffer of Niemann Foods, Inc.
The Chamber attempted to give away $25 to no avail. No representatives from the United Way of Adams County, Amcon Distributing or Point to Point Technology Solutions were on hand to collect the cash prize. So, the Chamber money rolls over to March, when we will give away $50. The next Business Before Hours will be on Thursday, March 27, from 7-8:30 a.m. at Manpower's new location, 2638 Broadway.
Microtel Inn & Suites - January 24th, 2008 Photo Gallery
Nearly 70 early risers got a special tour of the new Microtel Inn & Suites Riverview on Jan. 24. Our thanks to owners Dan Griffin and Jim Rinella and general manager Marcus Redmon and staff. We toured several rooms and were impressed with the view, the color scheme and the flat screen televisions. The pool was inviting and the banquet facilities are to be ready in April. Griffin told us that this Microtel Inn is being used as a model for higher-quality Microtel Inns across the country.
Free stays were won by Pam Shaffer from the American Red Cross and Kevin Curran from Modern Printing. No one won the Chamber's $25 cash prize, so next month, one lucky attendee could win $50. Next month's Business Before Hours will take place at ETC ComputerLand, 3206 Kochs Lane, from 7-8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. We hope to see you there!
