Meet Stoney Creek Inn
A 5-foot stuffed bear, a blazing fire and a friendly smile greet every visitor staying at the Stoney Creek Inn. The lodge themed décor of this 72-room inn may look like 19th century back woods, but it has all the amenities the 21st century has to offer.
“Our hotels are warm, welcoming and fun,” says Quincy General Manager Dax Fohey, “right down to the stuffed animals we put on the beds.”
The Quincy hotel at 3809 Broadway opened in 1998 as the fourth facility in the Stoney Creek Inn chain. Owner James H. Thompson now has a collection of 11 properties in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin that range in size from 40 to 180 guest rooms. The newest facility, the Grand Lodge by Stoney Creek in Wausau, WI.., opened in December 2009 and contains a 50,000-square foot water park.
Quincy boasts of Stoney Creek Inn’s first indoor-outdoor pool. Families enjoy suites that contain bunk beds and sleeping for six people, and couples enjoy rooms with fireplaces and Jacuzzis. Stoney Creek Inn has its own gift shop, guest laundry facility and exercise room. Quincy room rates are reasonable, too, starting at only $79 per night.
“Our highest priority is ‘PEOPLE FIRST,’” says Fohey. “We continuously train our employees to answer the phone in a pleasant manner, greet guests by name, make eye contact, smile and go the extra mile to ensure that their stay is enjoyable. Every employee is important to the success of our company.”
“I believe in the nobility of hard work and feel privileged to spend my efforts in the hospitality industry, where ‘service to others’ is our highest calling,” stated Thompson in a recent email to his general managers.
“We take care of our people, too,” Fohey continues, noting that several employees have been with the Quincy Stoney Creek Inn since it opened. “We often send employees to assist at some of our other hotels. They strengthen their own skills as they teach others and they are allowed to ‘try on’ different positions in advance of a promotion.”
According to Fohey, more than 50 percent of hotel guests are business travelers, who enjoy wireless internet access, 24-hour coffee in the lobby and a complimentary breakfast that includes eggs, sausage, waffles and biscuits and gravy on the weekends.
The Stoney Creek Inn has two conference rooms that can handle business meetings, receptions or family reunions. Catering, beverage service, and audio/visual equipment is available for all occasions. The Northwoods Room can accommodate up to 200 people (theater style) and The Pines Room on the second floor can accommodate up to 50 guests. Property Services Manager Keith Shaffer will plan every detail to your satisfaction. Smaller, casual meetings are often held in Bearly’s Saloon before 5 p.m.
