Member Spotlight: Hot Locks Styling Salon

Tina Venvertloh is following in her grandfather’s footsteps. The late George Caspermeyer, a German immigrant, became a barber in 1927 according to his license hanging in Venvertloh’s office.  More than 60 years later, Venvertloh opened her own shop, Hot Locks Styling Salon, located at 628 South 20th Street.

“I wanted to be a hair stylist ever since I got a Barbie® Beauty Center for Christmas when I was in fifth grade,” laughs Venvertloh. “It must be in my blood.”

A Quincy native, Venvertloh is a 1983 graduate of Quincy Beauty Academy and worked in various salons before opening Hot Locks in 1990 at 1405 N. 12th Street. She reinvented the company in 2007 with her move to the south end of town.

“My new logo does not include the typical scissors and comb artwork normally associated with a stylist,” she says. “It has a girl that appears rejuvenated and alive…and that’s how you feel after I style your hair.”

Venvertloh emphasizes that hairstyles should be job appropriate.

“First impressions are really important,” reminds Venvertloh. “Above all, your hair needs to be neat, clean and combed to project a confident and competent employee. Styles are more of a personal preference, but business people need to be aware of the image their company expects.

Hot Locks Styling Salon offers haircuts, permanents, color and highlighting, “up-dos” for weddings and prom, waxing, paraffin hand treatments and manicures.

Venvertloh says that cuts go in and out of style on a regular basis, each time coming back newer and fresher than the former version. Asymmetrical cuts, where layers do not blend and lengths vary, are currently in style.

“But not everyone looks good in long hair or bangs,” she says. “The key is for the hairstylist to help each client find a cut that accents the facial features they like and diminishes the features they don’t like. We analyze the shape of the face, they eyes, forehead and nose. When coloring hair, we look at skin tone and eye color. There’s much more to a good hairstyle and color than most people realize. It’s not about the money, it’s about how you make people feel about themselves.”

Even after 25 years in the business, Venvertloh takes classes to become familiar with new styles and advances in the field. She encourages clients to leave hair styling and coloring to the professionals.

“I always say that if you are going to play, you are going to pay,” she warns. “The products that a stylist uses are far superior to what you can buy over the counter. Our products do not contain harsh chemicals and they have the proper pH balance to ensure that your hair performs the way the cut is intended.”
