Member Spotlight: Gem City Electric

Gem City Electric Company has been a resource for local electricians for more than 100 years. Located in a 10,000-square-foot warehouse area of the Quincy Development Center, 1400 N. 30th Street, the company became a fully owned subsidiary of Consolidated Electrical Distributors in December 1994.

“We’re a wholesale distributor, so our primary clients are the area’s electricians, but we also sell products to industrial and commercial enterprises as well as  ‘do-it-yourself’ home owners,” says Purchasing Manager Don Stegeman. “Electricity is a complicated and often dangerous business, so we don’t have a lot of walk-in traffic from the general public, but there is some. We cannot help engineer a project , but we can fill a bill of materials for someone who knows what he needs.”

That includes everything from light bulbs, switches and cover plates to conduit wire, panels and breakers to hand tools. Gem City Electric offers name brands like Eaton-Cutler Hammer Company, Phillips Lighting, Leviton, Klein, Hubbell Lighting and Ideal.

“We sell everything that has to do with electricity for your home or business,” says Stegeman, who has worked at Gem City Electric since 1978 and also writes quotes and provides inside sales service.

Gem City Electric was founded in 1909, and its California-based parent company still focuses on meeting its customers' electrical requirements one customer at a time.

“Even though Consolidated Electrical Distributors has one of the nation's largest electrical distribution networks, with close to 600 locations coast-to-coast, they still do business based on the needs of the individual,” says Stegeman. “Our mission is to be the low-cost supplier of electrical material in our market, which covers a 75-mile radius of Quincy.”
Several times each year, Gem City Electric invites area contractors to meet with representatives from vendors to see and feel the best and newest products on the market.

For more information, stop by Gem City Electric on the north end of the Quincy Development Center during normal business hours from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or contact Stegeman at 217-222-0545.
