Meet Doors-N-More
The “more” of Doors-N-More has overtaken the company’s namesake.
“
Doors-N-More…What’s the More? WINDOWS,” says Craig Heming, a co-owner of the company with his brothers Steven and Brad. “Replacement windows and new construction windows has become our primary business. We sell more windows than doors.”
Energy efficiency is the primary reason that customers choose to make a change.
“It’s like wrapping a warm blanket around your home. When you stop the draft and air exchange allowed by the old windows, the dollars you spend to heat and cool your home actually STAY in your home,” he says, estimating that the average homeowner will save 20-25% on their energy bill.
Sunrooms are also claiming a large portion of the company; Doors-N-More has installed 20 already this year. The three-season room is enclosed by large vertical four-track windows or eight-foot sliding windows, often made of thick vinyl, that allow up to 75% ventilation compared to 50% ventilation regular double hung windows afford. All-season rooms have traditional heating and cooling systems and add square footage to a home.
“Decks are wonderful, but many people want a place in their home where they feel like they are outdoors, but they do not want to deal with the wind, rain, bugs and extreme temperatures. Sunrooms bring the outside in,” says Heming. “They are becoming the room where families gather for dinner, where couples enjoy their morning coffee, where families interact without the television.”
Craig and Steven Heming purchased the entry door and window division of Overhead Door Company from their father, Ken, and the other owners, in 1994 and renamed the business Doors-N-More. Brad joined the partnership a few years later.
“People have asked how we stay successful as far as being a family-run business that gets along,” says Craig. “We each have an area of the business that we handle and then we stay out of each other’s way.”
Steven is the head of the Commercial Division that provides companies with steel doors, hollow metal doors, aluminum and glass storefront doors, automatic door openers and doors for modular buildings that are shipped all over the world. Brad is the head of the Sunrooms Division and Craig handles the day-to-day operations.
The Hemings opened the largest product showroom in a 100-mile radius when they moved to the company’s current location at 336 S. 36th in 2005. All kinds of doors—decorative front doors, patio doors, storm doors, back doors, aluminum commercial doors—are on display, along with hardware options, siding, Sunsetter Retractable Awnings, windows, Sunrooms and more.
“We believe that it is easier for a customer to make decisions if they can experience and use the product rather than just look at it in a brochure,” says Heming.
